Feeling Hopeful Despite Life Shaking Me to The Core

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead

Despite 2019 and the beginning of 2020 just about shattering me, I’m feeling hopeful for the future.

2019 was my toughest year and so far, 2020 isn't better. In 2019, within a span of 17 days in March, three loved ones passed away. I felt like I was in the ocean being knocked down by waves and just when I was able to get up another one took me down.

As the end of 2019 approached, I was feeling restored and happy to begin another, hopefully much better year. Unfortunately, I received another blow on December 28, when my stepbrother Elijah suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. Losing a loved one is never easy, but losing a sibling is especially devastating.

Our family had two memorials for Elijah (he was so loved, there were others given by his friends too). The first was in Washington state and the second in California. After the second in early March, I was feeling ready to go back to some kind of normal.

Ha! That didn’t happen. The day after my husband and I returned home, the first case of COVID-19 was reported in our county. It wasn’t long before we were all ordered to stay home. So, for me, life has been turned upside down for all of 2020. There hasn’t been a normal and I've gotten really good at just going with it.

Some good has come from this. It’s really shaken me and my life to the core. I know now more than ever what’s really important to me in life and let go of some things that aren’t. I hope that some good can come from this current crisis too. I hope this crisis is a wake up call and a catalyst for change.

Here’s some things I hope even a tiny bit of come from this….

I hope more people become aware that changing their diet and lifestyles is one of the most empowering and effective ways to take responsibility for their health. That by improving their health, our healthcare system will become less burdened, and will be better able to handle the things we can't prevent.

I hope more people become aware that the Standard American Diet leads to obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes and will change their ways. These are 3 underlying conditions that an April 22 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found were the most common underlying medical conditions of COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the New York City area. They’re also, the majority of the time, preventable and even reversible with diet and lifestyle interventions.

I hope more people vote.

I hope more people vote with their dollars for the small businesses they want to survive and don’t assume they’re being helped by government funding. I personally have 2 small businesses, my nutrition practice and my jewelry business, and haven’t been able to receive any funding yet. I don’t know if I'll be able to. Most of my small business owning friends are in the same situation.

I hope more people vote with their dollars to support local farmers and ranchers.

I hope we can come up with new ways of being and learn to live in a more balanced way with nature.

I hope that more people will look at the things in their lives that aren’t worth resuming and don’t.

I hope we use this glimpse we’ve had of nature being restored by the break in human activity and create ways to live more in balance on this planet.

I hope we’ve realized what’s really important to each of us in life and cultivate more of the things we love and less of the things that stress us out.

I hope more people grow gardens and raise animals for food.

I hope we each ask ourselves if we can live with/consume less stuff to lessen our burden on our planet and it’s finite resources.

I hope instead of letting our differences in opinions divide us, we let our similarities and the fact that we're all in this together whether we like it or not, unite us.

If you'd like help changing your diet and lifestyle, I'd love to help. For the time being, I'm offering virtual consultations only. You can choose which service fits your needs best and schedule here.
